Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²). For most adults, BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness and is commonly used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.
BMI Categories
Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
Normal weight: BMI 18.5 – 24.9
Overweight: BMI 25 – 29.9

- BMI does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass
- It does not account for age, gender, or ethnicity
- Athletes may have high BMI due to muscle, not excess fat
- Pregnant women should use different calculations
